Faith Called by All Creation: Trusting the God Who Spoke All Things Into Being
Psalm 148 summons heavens, kings, and youths to praise — and that universal call is itself the seedbed of faith and trust.
Hallelujah.Praise GOD from the heavens;give praise on high. Give praise, all you angels, give praise, all divine hosts. Give praise, sun and moon, give praise, all bright stars. Give praise, highest heavens, and you waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the name of GOD—who commanded that they be created, and who made them endure forever, establishing an order that shall never change. Praise GOD, O you who are on earth, all sea monsters and ocean depths, fire and hail, snow and smoke, storm wind that executes God’s command, all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars, all wild and tamed animals, creeping things and winged birds, all kings and peoples of the earth, all princes of the earth and its judges, youths and maidens alike, old and young together. Let them praise GOD’s name—for sublime is this name alone—of the One whose splendor covers heaven and earth. [God] has exalted the horn of this peoplefor the glory of all faithful ones,Israel, the people brought close.Hallelujah.
Psalm 148 is the final Hallel of the Psalter's great Hallelujah climax (Pss 146–150). Its sweep moves from the highest heavens down to young and old together, then zooms in on Israel, the people brought close. The pivot of the psalm is verse 5: 'who commanded that they be created' — the word of the Lord that creates and sustains all things. Faith, in this psalm, is not first a human decision but a divine summons: creation exists to praise, and the people of God exist to be drawn near.
